Tokyo : Following a series of earthquakes on Monday that caused a fire and buried people under rubble on the west coast of its largest island, JAPAN issued tsunami alerts and ordered evacuations.Soon after 4 p.m., the Japan Meterological Agency reported more than a dozen earthquakes, one of which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 off the coast of Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures. Later, Japan lowered its strongest tsunami alert, but advised coastal people to stay away from their houses since there was still a chance of devastating waves.
A major tsunami warning for Ishikawa and lower-level tsunami advisories or warnings for the remaining portion of Honshu's western coast and the northernmost of its main island, Hokkaido, has been issued by the agency. NHK TV, a public broadcaster in Japan, issued a warning that floodwaters could reach as high as 5 meters (16.5 feet) and asked people to evacuate as quickly as possible to higher ground or the top of a neighboring building.
Hours after the initial notice, NHK stated that warnings were still being broadcast and that the tsunami waves might keep coming back. The area was also shaken by a number of aftershocks. Yoshimasa Hayashi, a spokesman for the government, stated that it was imperative that residents in coastal districts evacuate before the impending tsunami.
